Vernon Swart was born in Stellenbosch, South Africa. He studied Fine Arts at the University of Stellenbosch, obtaining a Masters Degree in 1986. He taught painting, drawing and History of Art in Cape Town and Stellenbosch from 1986 – 1998. Since then he has been working as a full-time artist from his studio in Stellenbosch.
Although his work covers various genres, he is best known for his landscapes and nudes, reflecting a highly refined, yet evocative realist style. He works on paper and canvas, in a variety of different mediums.
Swart’s first solo exhibition was entitled ARNISTON (Stellenbosch 1989). Since then he has presented many exhibitions, amongst which were MIRAGE (Pretoria 2000), BEAUTIFUL GHOSTS (Franschhoek 2007) and SIX GUNS (Stellenbosch 2011). He has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including shows in London, New York, Amsterdam, The Bahamas and Namibia.
He is currently working on two projects. The first is an exhibition entitled NAMAKWALAND, to be presented in Okiep in August, 2013. The second is a series of works featuring the Breede River and its environs, to be presented at the River Breeze Conference Centre in Witsand, the date still to be determined.
